Happy Friday Muses! I hope you all are doing well! We’ve made it to the end of the week!
So, this past Wednesday, Babes and I were able to have us a date night which included dinner and a baseball game. It’s the final homestand series for the Montgomery Biscuits and we wanted to make sure we caught a game before the rain moved through our area this week.
Now, I love my Biscuits and I love ballpark concessions (who doesn’t love a good funnel cake or loaded fries or NACHOS!) However, for the price we pay when it’s all said and done for a little snack, drinks, etc; we could have actually gone out to eat! So, this time, that’s what we decided to do.
Wednesday evening, Jatarri and I parked and walked and had pre-baseball dinner at Dreamland BBQ. We have two Dreamland locations here in Montgomery, but we want to the original location on 12 W Jefferson St., Montgomery, AL 36104.
What I love about different parts of downtown is how walkable it is. We parked near the EJI memorial (where we now have statues of Rosa Parks & MLK) and walked up to the restaurant. After there, it was a straight shot to Riverwalk Stadium.
Let’s talk BBQ.
I’m very picky about BBQ, I usually only eat my dad’s or granddaddy’s BBQ. At least I know meat is clean and the membrane off the ribs is peeled off in addition to being seasoned to the bone. On top of that, it’s not my favorite type of cuisine in the first place.
However, Babes is a huge fan of BBQ, if he could have ribs every day if you let him. But, on our date travels, we’ve never ventured to Dreamland together which has some of the best BBQ in the city in my opinion.
For a Wednesday evening before a baseball game, it was a steady flow of customers with the restaurant not being full but a couple of big parties already seated when we got there. We didn’t have to wait to be seated and the hostesses were very nice.
Our server, whom I unfortunately didn’t get his name, was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.
This wasn’t my first time having Dreamland (I’ve previously had takeout from there,) but never dined-in. However, it was Babes first time and our waiter was very helpful with answering questions.
Since we were going to the game afterwards in like an hour or so, we just went straight to drinks and main course.
Babes ended up getting a full slab (if you know him, this isn’t shocking in the least,) from the From the Pit part of the menu with fries and baked beans. As for me, under the Sandwiches portion of the menu, I got the Traditional BBQ Sandwich with the Works. The works is Wickles Pickles and their house Cole Slaw. Of course, I also got fries and baked beans.
This is what our table was looking like:
For drinks, he got the “Big Daddy’s Iced Tea” and I got the “Big Daddy’s Squeeze.” So Sweet Tea for him and Lemonade for me. Jatarri said the sweet tea was pretty good and he’d order it again, however, my lemonade wasn’t all that good.
As for the food, both of our entrees came with House BBQ sauce. When you get the ribs, they give you the sauce on the side to sauce ’em up the way you want to.
Ultimately, he gave the ribs a 7 or 8/10. With notes to saying the sauce was alright (he likes sweeter BBQ sauce and their house sauce has a “twang” to it) but apparently there are other sauces and he would like to try those. The meat itself was good and tender. The baked beans were excellent (agreed) and the fries delicious.
As for me, my sandwich was delicious. A solid 8/10. The meat was tender but I did have a couple of the harder pieces of meat. The meat was flavorful and further accentuated by the sauce, the cole slaw on top along with the pickles gave it that “umph.” I’ve always loved their fries but man, are they the best in house and HOT, I also usually feel like baked beans can be easily messed up in restaurants if you can tell they are “straight from a can,” but, Dreamlands beans? Delicious and flavorful.
Overall, we had a great experience at Dreamland and will definitely be back.
Shoutout to Dreamland for an awesome date night and if y’all are downtown, make sure to consider paying them a visit. There’s also plenty of TVs and a bar to sit at, so you won’t miss the games!
