How Deni Got Her Groove Back: Working Through Postpartum Hair Loss with Design Essentials

This year, I’m dedicating time to getting myself back to feeling like myself again. A couple of months ago, I started with my hair.

My hair has long been a huge source of insecurity for me. It’s been naturally short pretty much all my life. I’ve gone from relaxed to natural, back to relaxed, and now I’m technically natural again. I’ve tried several different types of protective styles, experimented with wigs, and now I’m planning to explore hair color.

Just a girl and her new favorite wig from Brown Bomb on Amazon

After having my baby girl, I didn’t necessarily experience any postpartum symptoms until mid-year last year. I have had a lot of postpartum shedding and thinning. It’s been causing me to be even more insecure about my hair.

Back in October, I started ten toes down on a new regimen with my hairdresser, Jasmine. I’m still in the process of finding a liquid collagen that I really like, but I am going to stay on top of keeping my hair done.

One of the moments I really discovered how much my hair was shedding

So far this year, I took my cornrows from under my wig down and it was wash day. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a good wash that made my hair feel both clean but not stripped of its moisture/natural oils. After trying a couple of different products, I decided to go back to basics with the same brand my mom used on my hair when I was younger. Even that didn’t work.

So, enter my mom’s curiosity. My mom recently cut her hair short again (which, if you know her, you know this isn’t shocking at all—and by recently, I mean some months ago). She decided to try some new stuff out that I believe her hairdresser uses on her hair, and that’s from Design Essentials.

She recently picked up the Honey Crème Moisture Retention Detangling Conditioning Shampoo and the Almond Butter Express Instant Moisturizing Conditioner.

I had always wanted to try their hair products but never got around to doing it. But the other day, when I was over at the house, wash day came for me.

Let me start by saying this…

After washing and conditioning my hair, this was the first time since before I had my baby that my hair felt both clean but not stripped. My hair felt soft, and it stayed properly detangled without knotting or feeling unhealthy. I didn’t have to pull hard to detangle, and my hair LOOKED healthy. The last time I washed and conditioned my hair, it looked stringy, felt “squeaky,” and I was just so done with it.

The shampoo smelled amazing, and it didn’t take a lot to get it to lather in my hair. Even the lather felt rich and conditioning. It didn’t feel drying or stripping. My scalp felt and looked clean while not losing its natural luster or feel.

The conditioner wasn’t my favorite scent—I’m just not an almond girl. But the conditioner had the most amazing slip to it to detangle my hair, and it was so easy to do so without a lot of tugging. It helped leave my hair feeling soft and ready to dry and style.

Overall, I was very happy with how my hair felt and looked afterward. I look forward to checking out their full range of products and seeing if I want to buy my own of these products (because I can’t take my mom’s stuff ALL the time), or a different range of theirs. Either way, I will definitely be using this brand again.

Lovingly yours,
